Hello,

We have been running in our rebuilt engine and done about 600 miles now (998A+, LCB K&N). Engine running good etc. However i find that when i lift my foot of the accelerator in gear you can distinctly hear  squeak from the engine block. I'm positive its not something like the fan belt or alternator as the sound comes internally. The noise stops if i press the clutch. My dad thinks its the thrust bearing does this sound the case? Sounds like its coming from the left hand side of the camshaft oil pump area. Any ideas would be brill!

Thanks matt

Use a long screwdriver to detect where the sound come from

Hi Match

My squeak is just like yours when I dip the clutch or back off the accelerator, result = engine bay squeak. I do not have the answer for you yet - but I do know when it started. Mine started today when I fixed a bracket for my RC40 which was clonking - the exhaust is now nice and tight (perhaps too tight - but I'll sort that after this).

As the exhaust is now holding firm, it acts as a rigid fixed bar, and as I release the load the engine must be moving a little resulting in the squeak. In my case, over the last month or so I have put on new RC40, manifold & hangers, new engine steady bushes, new ultimate steady bushes and added a new lower gearbox steady. Realistically I dont expect it is any of them, unless they have failed, or perhaps the bulkhead steady bolt is moving, but I will double check all these first anyway.

Also its worth noting when I am pulling away I get quite a bit of clutch judder. Originally I thought it was the lack of gearbox steady as mine was missing, this sorted it a bit but still pretty bad, so I suspect engine mounts or subframe mounts - all of which are probably knackered - is the source of the movement, the judder and the damn squeak.

I think my next job will be to check and replace the mounts (my guess is the engine mounts) and if it cures the squeak I will let you know - I definitely know where Im going looking

hope this is some sort of help

Footnote - squeak cured. I did two things: double checked my engine ties and both had settled, I also read on hear that I shoudn't be using poly so I am considering going back to the original. I also squirted a bit of light teflon lube on them

Second was a significantly perished tie bar mount; someone had put poly on both sides of the mounting point and the inside one was seriously deformed. I replaced wth poly outside and rubber inside with new cup washer, flat washer and nut. Steering is much better.

One of these two cured my squeak
