Just a quick question on caliper seals.

Does the solid seal sit half way down the caliper or is the one with the groove?

I don't know which calipers you have, but in general the hydraulic seal is always a heavy square section and fits in a groove in the caliper, while the other seal (designs vary) is a dust, dirt and water seal, not built to withstand pressure, and sits at the outside end of the caliper bore.

If you are overhauling bits of your Mini, you should always have a manual to hand, which should make it clear.

Remember that an extremely high standard of cleanliness is necessary here, which rules out most garages. Often the kitchen worktop is best, and use plenty of fresh, clean brake fluid as lubricant. The hydraulic seal must be fitted into a clean groove by fingers alone, clean gloves with no trace of oil  are ok, because tools will damage the sealing face of the rubber. It should not require any significant force. On the other hand, the dust seals on Lockheed calipers are an absolute swine....

+1 for Tiger's comments - getting the dust seal metal ring back in place takes patience and careful alignment....
