Hello everyone.  Live at Crookham in in the wilds of North Northumberland semi retired

Got the chance to buy an R 1998 Cooper Red no MOT but it is a runner.  Only seen pics of it but the body seems reasonable. Unsure of mileage will find out.

It belongs to one of my wifes colleagues who sadly and very reluctantly needs to dispose of the car due to imminent child.   Need to arrive at a price but a bit clueless there.

Seems to be in fair nick, minilites, new tyre  leather interior webasto electric roof etc.

First car back in the day was a 848cc 1964 Austin mini long gone!!.  Not bad on the spanners as recently finished a medium restoration project on a 1978 Dolomite 1500 HL and have moved it on to a fellow Triumph club owner.

The above is a bit vague but could do with some price ranges etc. as a starter please. Will post a photo later on today.

Colin.

Seen the car today.  The vehicle was bought from a mini enthusiast ( he has three others) by a lady colleague of my wife's so I expected a fairly honest description and answers to my questions.

The good stuff.  Vehicle seems to be unmolested and original. Car showing  57k on clock believed genuine.  Interior spot on no tears to leather and all walnut complete and unfaded.  Carpets sound with genuine mini overmats.  No damp underneath carpets with no musty car smells.  Seats move back and forth hinge forward as they should. All glass original and all door furniture intact.  Webasto sunroof electric untorn and complete. Doors close squarely with no drop evident, boot lid and bonnet the same. No leaks to engine, orange  coolant to level. Ditto brake fluid.  Tyres - Yokohamas all round on refurbed Minilites with 4mm+ spare unused.  Stands square no shocker bounce back.New battery. Red calipers and drums. Two sets of keys and alarm fobs.  Cat and exhaust visually seem ok

The not so good

No MOT last one expired March 2012 but believe car laid up in Sept 2011 very few miles done since the March 2011 MOT. "A" panels to rear of front wheel arches rotten although owner has got new ones ready to replace.  Inspection underneath shows rear of sills rusty potential new ones needed. Floor in good nick seems "ungrounded".  Corrosion to body mounts at front of rear swing arms by the grease nipples. Rust to front of body near to indicators.  Body generally in good nick but it has had some paint as some time to front n/s wing as white stripe missing.  Grille has dents in it.

Not possible to start it as owners father had turned battery charger off.  Engine turned over slowly but owner assures me it is a goer.  Oil a bit dirty but to level obviously needs a good service.  Engine generally far from concours but all intact.  Needs alternator and belts.

Fairly keen on car but no idea what to offer.

Hi and welcome to TMF. Looking at the pictures the rust may be a bit more extensive than you think.

The A panels are toast and judging by that rust the flitch may be crusty as well (especially on the r/h side). The A post needs a thorough checking as well.

The front panel to wing join appears rusty so budget for a complete front end.

A pair of sills is cheap enough and with these removed you will see what damage there is at the heelboard end.

Have you checked inside the boot especially at the rear of the wheel arches??

So going by that i would say an offer of around £1000 tops.

well its been almost 4 years and all work completed on body. New front end and wings, sills, a panels, floor, heel board, part new boot floor, battery box. New subframe, radius arms reconned, complete new rear brakes pipes and hoses, cables, shockers and trumpet rubbers etc,  undersealed.  Will waxoyl when body painted All ball joints, tr ends, bottom sup pins, tie bars rubbers etc new, cv boots wheel bearings all new.

Car looks a multi coloured mess given all that but now needs a touch of non structural filler here and there body flatted off primed and painted engine back in and interior glass etc.

Could do with a person handy with a spray gun my talents do not stretch to this.
