Don't know what difference the electronics make, if any, but that's usually an indication of a poorly battery that drops too much voltage when heavily discharged. Poor earths or connections wouldn't help either.

What does it do when you try and start by the key?

Does the engine attempt to start? Does it turn over? Does the starter just click?

could be a poor battery, the colder weather usually kills a battery getting towards the scrap man. It could be that you have just enough to crank over but nothing left over for the coil?

try another battery or jump lead it, if it fires i would get a new bigger battery, biggest that fits in the box!   Also check you have good battery earth connection to body and engine!

My SPi cooper is sometimes temperamental in starting - does your fuel pump ALWAYS kick in when you turn the key to ignition? I have to turn it a few times before I get lift off (have another relay box to throw in)
