Was driving absolutely fine last night with no problems until i stopped for around 20 minutes. Started up again fine drove down the road and suddenly it died. Stopped at the side of the road and tried to start again but it wouldnt fire. turned over fine but it wouldnt start. Looked under the bonnet and noticed a pipe had come off (picture below). IMG_0796_1.jpg

I put this pipe back on the side of the carb (hif44 i believe)  but it was a very lose fit, i tried with a cable tie but it still wouldnt start. i also tried putting it on the side of the manifold where it was a much tighter fit but still no luck.

The breakdown guy said he thought my ignition coil had gone even though its pretty much brand new. IMG_0801_1.jpg

He brought me and the mini home (on the back of his truck) and i went to bed as it was 2am!

I went and had a look this morning and thought id check the battery. i had a look and noticed this!IMG_0804_1.jpg

About half an inch of water in the bottom of the battery box, could this be linked in anyway?

after cleaning it out i was left with this.

IMG_0809_1.jpg

It had taken all of the paint up and left a black gunk.

If anyone has any ideas on what the starting issue is please let me know, cheers!

that pipe wont cause it not to start, its just a breather. the water as well isnt good but if it turns over then ur battery must be fine. have you got a spark and fuel getting into the engine?

Fuel is getting into the carb. How should i get for spark? Take the plugs out?

take a plug out and hold it against the block (with something NON CONDUCTIVE!!!!) while someone cranks and see if it sparks, if it does do it for all of them just incase one or two arnt. to check for fuel the plugs will get wet eventually while you crank it. but be careful not to over do it because the engine will eventually be overfueled then not start untill its dried out a bit. if they arnt wet then no fuel. my 44 seemed fine and i had a similar problem, turned out there was a fuel leak in it and it just flooded the engine

What should i hold it against the block with? Is this with the ht leads attached and 1 taken out at a time? Thanks for the help :P

yes ht lead on it and i hold the lead but you can still get electrocuted so find something non conductive if you can. i rest the plug on a head stud when i do it while hold the lead quite far back. do you have points? if so take the dizzy cap off and see if they are sparking there. alot safer

The pipe does matter matter, it may just be a breather but if it's not on the carb there's an airleak in its place that will really weaken the mixture at part throttle. Are you sure its water and not battery acid. You don't want to be running with a faulty battery!

Is there a way to tell? it doesnt have a smell to it. so does that pipe go on the empty nozzle on the carb? its a very loose fit if so.

Are you sure its water that was in your battery tray as if its taken all the paint up it sounds more like battery acid to me.

Time to get an new battery and then check to make sure your alternator is putting out the correct voltage.

But ive been told battery acid burns badly, and i put my hand in it at first and it did nothing. Could it be distilled water if its coming out of the cells?
