If the breakdown guy said the coil is fudged, I would replace it and see what happens..........

Hmmm I'd check the charging voltage before you do much else - unusual for a battery to cook up and split like that.

how do i check this?

You'll need a basic multimter - select DC volts, range 0-20 ish, start the car and run at a fast idle - voltage should stabilize at somewhere between 13.8 and 14.2 volts, much above that and you have issues with blowing the electrolyte out.

It's pretty simple to test the coil - it's been detailed above. If you do have a simple electronic ignition module it could be fried too.

Right so theres no spark at any of the plugs, does this mean my coil has gone? The coil gives out 12v and roughly 10v when cranked. The coil is a lucus dlb198 so could this be the wrong coil? Thanks again for the help all.

Not sure if mentioned or if you have replaced the dizzy cap or not......

If you have not replaced the dizzy cap, check on the inside of the cap and look at the centre of it ( where the contact points are. )  There should be a small pick up that rests on the rotor arm. Its sits in the middle of the cap and rests in a spring. If this is missing then there will be no spark to the plugs. I dont have a pic to show, hope that makes scence.

If you have replaced the dizzy cap, ignore. lol.
