Hi Guys,

My leyland Mini 850 is pretty loud and can give you quite a head ache on long journeys,

I know that this is very common, little motor working hard.

But was wondering how much of a difference the underbonnet soundproofing makes.

I know that I can also get some for the bulkhead but dont want it to soak up water and cause rust.

Will it make much of a difference on its own?

Thanks

Tom.

In a word, No. There isn't much you can do to make a mini truly quiet but just the under bonnet won't do a lot at all.

i fitted it and i found it did dull the sound, above 40 tho doesnt do much but around town its nicer. the bulkhead one will be good. put more in the floors, bootlid, and interior bulkhead to get it even quieter. there is a thread on here about it somewhere

I've never really bothered with under bonnet sound proofing, but instead tried to stuff as much carpet underlay behind the dash, lower bulkhead and carpets as possible.

Don,t bother soundproofing under the bonnet, it does not make any significant difference to noise levels in the car but without it, it allows  more heat dissipation from within the engine compartment on warm days and ( tongue in cheek ) you may gain an extra 0.005 bhp due to weight loss !!!!!!! Lol

I do believe that a MODERN sound proofing material under the bonnet will make a useful difference. Some of the more traditional materials merely trapped water and caused rust. Some of the stuff that looks like aluminised bubble-wrap is both a sound and heat insulator, and should achieve useful results if the bulkhead is properly covered, which means having the subframe out.

I also noted many years ago that a standard (in those days) traditional sound insulation kit had 4 triangular pieces which were glued to the bonnet, between the stiffners, and those definitely do damp certain resonances, and make a slight, but worthwhile, difference.

But making the Mini quieter needs a comprehensive approach, giving attention to damping panel resonances, which means replacing the bitumen pads (possibly with something similar but better) that are usually removed for floor repairs etc.
