When im stopped, if in neutral and the clutch is down, the engine sounds normal, slight tappet ticking noise, nothing unusual.
When the clutch is up (still in neutral) the gearbox makes a noise louder then the engine, its a like a metallic rattle/grind, rhythmic and changes with the engine revs yet only really can be heard over load exhaust on idle. Its not like a single noise, its lots and lots and lots of metallic rattling noises. Yet all is silent and well when i have the clutch engaged.
Also some days it just wont have a gear, especially bad in 1st. Often if you go into second and then push hard forwards it will sort of force it in, but others it really really wont have it. as in the gear-stick physically wont go forwards into the slot. (worst when stood still such as at traffic lights)
Its a 97/8 MPI Cooper Sport (4 gears and reverse (not 500)), It had its gearbox reconditioned around a thousand miles ago. Got plenty of 20/40 mineral oil (just under max) and clutch fluid level is on the max (full plastic bottle).
It started both of these strait from getting it back after a rather rubbish local garage did me the gearbox (after 4 months, many issues, mistreating/no respect of/for my car and an extortionate rip off bill) and they put 10/40 semi synthetic oil in, which i thought could be the culprit, now with thick 20/50 as has been for 300 miles and its not better.
What could be causing it?
Is it even a fault or is this normal?
Could they be linked?
Any simple fixes or is it a garage job? (given I although very willing don't have a huge amount of knowledge or time)
Is it okay still to drive or will I be doing it more damage?
Any help appreciated, Thanks, James.
