Black side down, copper side up?

Think so yes. Aren't they stamped "TOP" on the face ?

Feels stupid because I feel I should know the answer.... No markings at all. I guess it will only fit one way.

clean surfaces and no sealant the best approach?

I would just check you have the oil feed hole (water pump rear side of the engine)

 

lined up with a hole in the gasket , most gaskets have two so it isn't handed , but have seen some with one oil feed hole

 

could run the rocker gear dry

Yes mate. Just the gasket. Don't feel stupid, I ask questions here all the time, that's what the forums for. Don't know where I'd be without these guys !

Remember to re set your valve clearances.
