Hi was just wondering if i've fitted my 6 bladed fan on the right way round.

 

If I fit it the other way it will hit the crank case breather.

Avoiding the swear filter

You need to fit the rad too so you can check the clearance, the metal fan could need a different spacer arrangement. That might get you the clearance you need.

What breather are you using? The Mini one is a squared off, flattened can to clear the fan. The full round section cans are for other Marques really.

I have fitted the rad lol.

 

I'm using a round breather, don't really want to change it as its all sealed up now lol

The mod involves either pounding the round side of the breather flat near the fan or... I have seen where people cut the interfering area off and weld a flat plate over the cut-off area.  Fit the radiator and check the fan to radiator clearance first as Dan suggested.

I have turned it round, and it clears the breather with the fan spacer. 

 

But now it fouls the rad at the top. I tried to use a smaller spacer (cough some nuts) which it still clears the breather but still fouls the rad.

 

Is this a common problem? I've tried it with no spacer but it hits the breather!

 

Any ideas would be great! :)

You could 'adjust' the fan blades, but it seems as thought you will need to alter the breather.

it's so close to clearing the breather with no spacers! How much more room does the cases with flat breathers give?

 

I think this might be the easiest way out of this one lol

Fitting a fan must be done correctly. You are supposed to have the 'flattened' oil breather can and without that it can be a problem.

Remember, the Mini cooling system is a 'ducted fan'. The centre of he fan blades must be in line with the lip of the fan shroud and the clearance around he shroud to the blade tips must be constant. This is key to the correct amount of air being pushed through the radiator.

You may have to flatten the 'pot' to achieve this.

I have a cover that came with the engine. It doesn't have a canister on it, just as metal pipe coming out at 90 degrees. It has a small crack which I can weld up so it won't leak. I'm going to vent the breathers to air with a small oil breather filter thing. This would give me plenty of clearance so no spacer is needed. 

 

Is it ok not to have the canister have to be used?

Not really, but then it's not really acceptable to have the engine open vented either but many people do. The canister both acts as a flame trap and serves to separate a good amount of the oil vapour out of the hideous mixture that comes out of the engine. Without a canister and just going open vented you'll have a very messy engine bay.

As above getting the fan aligned with the rad is the most important thing, denting the can will work. Although if you are hesitant to change it because the engine is closed up, whacking it with a hammer is fairly likely to disturb the seal.

You could delete the 'can' and use an oil 'catch tank' under the front wing with a hose going from the stub breather pipe to the catch tank. that is what a lot of race & rally cars use.

Ok what if I cut a section out of the canister and weld a flat plate on. Leaving as much of the internal mesh in position.
would this help stop residue going all over the engine bay? I'm going to fit a oil breather filter thingy.
