It's fitted exactly the same way as the outer CV, there is a circlip in a groove in the end of the shaft that pops into another groove inside the joint. First just try simply removing it. You will need to hit the edge of the joint inner member with a drift and hammer. A long flat strike through screwdriver is ideal for this. Place the blade right on the edge of the joint member alongside the shaft and hit it, you will have to hold the shaft firmly to stop it all moving. If it really won't move you can remove the end cap from the joint inner member which will show you the end of the shaft and allow you to drive it right through. Lots of penetrating fluid will help too. This old joint is obviously scrap anyhow. Once it's out clean the spline on the shaft well and use a little (really little) Copperslip or maybe PTFE spray or graphite to stop it freezing up again.

That looks very worn to me and far from clean.   Time for a new one!

i managed to get it off in the end as the whole driveshaft popped away from the CV joint and i just stuck the pot joint end in the vice and use a socket to hit the shaft down and out.

i think it was mostly just the cap on the end that was stopping it coming off

thanks for all the help, Adam
