I have built an A+ 1275 to fit in my 1979 clubman estate.

The car is in a state where by it is ready to crank to see if i can get good oil pressure before its first start.

However, i cannot seem to get, with a second hand, and a refurbished starter motor to start.

I have bypassed the old selonoid and extended the signal wire to the new selonoid to no avail, both times i proved that the motor worked by using the old seloid to the wrong side of the new. as expected it spun the motor.

I have connected the motor directly to the battery and used the same signal and nothing still.

I am sure i have proved that both new "piggy back" style selonoids are duff however not doing this engine swap game before, have i overlooked anything?

thanks in advance

Matt

Hi

Just replaced a pre-engaged, last weekend (went for one of them high torque gear reduction ones, best £150 spent in a long time) anyway we had a similar issue.

On the original motor there is a stud to which you attach your 12V starting current, there is also a little tab on the solenoid for attaching a spade crimp, this is what triggers the solenoid. If your want to check your starter is working apply 12V from a battery to the large stud and then link from this to the spade terminal with a little jumper wire.

All being well it should just work…. You could even unbolt it form the engine and check it on a bench with a battery.

Yh I did this and it sparked, but nothing happened, hopefully the new one that is getting delivered today will solve my problems!!
