Hi,

Just wondering where is the best place to get a 5 speed gearbox for my 1.3i mini a second hand one preferably.

Thanks,

Elliot

Not easy to find a used one, but if you do I sure hope you have deep pockets.

Any reason you want a 5 speed? Depending on the model, changing the final drive may achieve what you're after.

The one that Minispares sell (c. £2000 if I remember correctly), has essentially an overdrive gear. Meaning you can have a 3.44 FDR and have decent acceleration up to 4th gear, then 5th gear is like a cruise mode.

I would love one but just can't justify the cost.

Minispares do a range of 5-speed gearboxes (see link below) but they don't come up secondhand very often......I have had one fitted to my Mini for over 10 years, as said good on motorways and a great shame BL never invested in the upgrade in 1980 when the Metro and A+ engine were introduced.......

Just for a better motorway drive as was already said, I love driving my mini but 4 gears is sometimes not enough especially for the motorway.

changing the diff would give you higher gearing than a 5 speed box

my 5 speed box with 12 inch wheels pulls 20 MPH for every 1000 revs, the MPI 4 speed minis are taller geared than this

A 2.9:1 CWP is a pretty good compromise for the motorway , and a good bet for most mildly modded motors. Gearing too high is`nt a good idea, as funny as it sounds the A series was designed to rev . Most in good health will sit happily at 3500rpm for ages , if memory serves right , that gives 75mph on 10"s. And you`ll still retain fairly good acceleration in the first three gears as the ratio spread suits the A series torque pattern. Cheaper than a 5 speeder too !
