Hi. Am I going ga ga ?? I have tried to adjust the single cable handbrake on my mini as described in the Haynes manual, but for the life of me cannot see how to get at,  let alone turn the nut hidden by the U-shaped bracket. Any Ideas ???

I've just done mine and found it fiddly but I did manage. Had to force the carpet out of the way unlock the lock nut and back it off a few turns then kept adjusting until the handbrake was effective on 3-4 clicks then re tightened the lock nut. Reformed the carpet. You can do with 3 hands and an extra eye on a stalk with a torch built in ha ha.

If the nut is inside the clevis then someone has either used the wrong nut, or just built your handbrake inside out. It should be a long nut with a large round flange at one end. Only the flange should be inside the clevis, the hex section should project out the back so you can get a spanner on it and the locknut should be outside too.

Just looking though the Forum.

Do you know, I have been around and working on cars for 38 odd years. My wife bought a Mini 30 couple of years ago and on the rare occasions I have had to adjust the handbrake I always thought what a STUPID arrangement for the cable. Now I know. Assembled wrong way round! I feel like a little bit of my life is now soooo much better. Just goes to show, you never stop learning. (Or maybe I am just stupid!) But thanks to Dan and Scooby for enlightening me!

I actually has this with a friend not last week, he had rebuilt his handbrake the wrong way and realised...I tell u what if that nut was tight good luck getting it undone when it's hidden by the handbrake bracket!
