1996 Mini Sidewalk Running Problems

Best Answer RedRuby , 24 April 2014 - 10:54 AM

You can't adjust if it's the standard ECU you may need to change the air inlet temperature sensor and have you checked the 4 vacuum hoses and connectors.

1 ECU to petrol trap (usually black)
2 petrol trap to inlet manifold (usually black)
3 inlet manifold to air filter box (usually red)
4 air filter box (usually yellow)

The connectors are prone to splitting and need to be a good airtight fit

new too this forum in desperation for a resolve with my sons mini sidewalk 1996 1275 spi. This car has developed a problem, initially was trying to stall at low revs, this has now developed into not starting when warm again intermittently. If the car is left for a while it will then start ,sometimes anyway. New parts fitted include a crank sensor, inlet manifold temp sensor after being plugged in with t4 or similar at a local garage although they said it was having trouble communicating with the car but recommended the temp sensor (no joy) . New coil this morning. Car fired up fine , left it running for ten mins, turned off and tried starting again with no joy. It was trying to start but lumpy. Any body out there HELP. Thanks in advance

mine does this on cold days and that apparently because it is running lean. What colour are the spark plugs? it might need the mixture turning up a bit.

thanks for your speedy response, didn't realise you can adjust this being a single point injection  (SPI 1275)?

You can't. Don't adjust anything unless you have the correct diagnostic equipment. Have a look through the injection specific forum section, this link may be of help.

You say the garage was having trouble communicating with the car, were they using the right plug? There are two plugs under the bonnet, one for diagnostics, one for the alarm. Many of the garages I've used (none Mini) have tried using the wrong plug, so I bought my own code reader.

When was the car serviced last? Have you tried changing the cheap items first, dizzy cap, rotor arm? I was having terrible intermitant cold start issues on my Sidewalk a month ago and people recommended all sorts (including the inlet temp sensor), but turned out to be a £1.80 rotor arm.
