hey, im 17 and looking to buy a mini! however i do not want to be doping alot of work to one, i am just looking to see if any one can give me some prices of them, i would really like the 1000cc engine on the log book but a 1275 for the real engine, if this makes sense? my budget is anywhere up to £2000, i would like on with falred arches preferablly. if not can any one give advise into how much it would cost to do these my self and where i would get materials from?
many thanks saul [email protected]

Hi, and welcome to TMF

For around £2k, you should be able to pick up the kind of mini your after, and lots and lots of them have been modified with things like flared wheel arches - its just a case of hunting for a bargin in the back of the usual magazines (miniworld, mini magazine etc...), ebay and of course on here in the for sale section! If you dont want to do much work on the car, getting one with as good bodywork as possible is a must, have a search round the forum (search button at the top of the screen by the way) and theres lots of articles about problem areas for rust and things to look for. Changing wheel arches is not that involved - and places like minispeed, minispares, minisport and moss-europe will have the parts you need.

As for having a 1000cc on the V5 and a 1275cc under the bonnet - thats not advisable from an insurance point of view. If something was to happen to the car, they'd take a very dim view on you not declaring a different engine. (As your 17 - the insurance on a 1000cc would be much better anyway!)

Good luck in your search, and enjoy the forum...

Welcome!

Don't bother looking in the mini mags, they are generally all overpiced for what they are! Stick to the local free papers and have a flick through autotrader (although again, they can be overpriced). Check on the mini forums (especially the best one of all! :) ) too. you'll also be able so see seom of the history of the car that way too by having a good search! Quite scary how people don't realise that sometimes!

Also keep an eye on ebay. you can get some bargains, but make sure you go and look at the car before you bid. There have been some horror stories on people getting there to find out a "solid" car is just solid rust!

Good luck, but please don't lie to the insurance about the engine size. It's not a good idea, and not fair to the other party if you were to hit them

On the point of the 1275 logged as a 998..... listen to people here, don't get your butt in trouble with the law, but all is not lost, with work a 998 can out perform a 1275, I had an 848 i tuned and that used to be huge fun and people never belived that it was an 848cc engine (i had a skimmed cooper 997 head on it + other toys) and its cheaper to insure a modified 998 than a 1275.

If anyone would like to argue the above point i will personally make them read word for word a copy of "Tuning the A series engine" by David Vizard. Then make them eat it.....without ketchup. Get this book it will help you alot if you are willing to put the work in and its not all expensive either

Good Luck

17 and drives a 156 alfa wuhhey bet they sting you for insurance lol being a 1.8.

You could try putting your request in the WANTED are of the site mite get some replys.

Cheers

Brad

An 998 modified can out perform a 1275 umm what about a modified 1275 plus would have to spend a bit of money to get a 998 to beat a 125 lol mini world the 998 is the same insurance group as the 1275 but you have to be 19 unfortunatly .

(p.s. this is not an argument just a point)
