Well if there is a modification (oil cooler) which has a sharp edge then yes it is a failure as is a damaged bumper

You're still wrong, it's only corrosion or damage, not modifications, modifications fail when they affect several things, usually to do with structural areas, but not sharp edges or projections.

If you get a fail for something like this that you have modified, firstly ask them point out where in the manual it says that modifications are a failure then ask for a copy of a VT17 appeal form if they refuse.

Something in an engine bag that isn't visible can't be a failure because it might be sharp I'm sure the engine block , dizzy , grill , bumper and front panel will hurt and do more damage than an oil cooler in an event of a crash or a road incident

Don't need one for a road car

Best to fit one for a race car / track car but road car don't need one

Just Gota door more regular oil changed and filter changes

And on a car that will not get used that often don't matter

so by that logic you don't need one? but hey...if you want oil that never gets to temperature then go for it ;-)

I would say that logic is completely backward - a race/competition car that will see high oil temps most of the time would benefit less from no stat than a road car that will often not get the oil to best operating temp at all, never mind trying to cool it down.

Has no-one tried modifying the front panel under the bumper and fitting an oil cooler there, like a Cobra? Would look much neater - have to move the number plate of course.

JohnR

That's pretty much how they're mounted on the miglias, they have their own little scoop and everything :) surely you can run with a numberplate to one side like an Alfa

I am afraid that is correct with your logic being backwards, the purpose of an oil cooler stat is to avoid the oil being overcooled, this is seen when the engine is run from cold or in colder climates. For the oil to work at best efficiency it should be hot, if it was too cold you will end up with oil which is thicker than it needs to be (reducing engine power due to the oil pump taking more power from the engine to pump) whilst also suffering for the all the symptoms associated with running the engine cool.

Race engines will tend to only be run at idle when stationary (where heat soak will occur) or at full chat when racing round a track, as such the stat isnt required as the engine is only ever running hot, on a road car a stat is vital

If I'm so wrong in this have a chat to Steve at med who builds race engines and road going engines for a living

Also have never fitted a cooler with a stat to any engine including there race lumps they do

If I had more free time and didnt have multiple assignments due then I would as I cannot believe someone who builds performance engines is recommending running without a themostat of some kind in the cooler!
