Lee, if you want to run without a stat thats your choice. You have been made aware of the benefits of running a stat etc.

 

Others, please respect Lee's decision on this, its his car and your advice as been posted for lee to consider.

I know people have there own personal opinions etc and people do know there stuff on here

My opinion which is why I'm stopping now is to stop reading so much crap from the net

Chat to people that do the job day in day out on minis to get a correct awnser not some random we on the internet

I wasnt wishing to rock the boat, just make you aware that you could easily ruin the life of your engine, there is plenty of info out there on the internet and in books to back up the theory so its not just an opinion. 

But at the end of the day no you shouldnt just take info from a forum as its populated by anyone who can make an account, and its your engine and your money you're spending so trust who you want :)

The real question would have been, have you monitored the oil temps?

 

What makes you think you need the oil cooler?

 

Monitoring of oil temps, would make the decision whether a oil cooler is needed or not, and further monitoring would highlight if a stat is required.

No worries, and I dont either but I do have experience working on both road and motorsport vehicles and currently am working on trying to stabilise oil and coolant temps on a Formula Renault single seater which is running much colder than it should, Hence my commenting on this thread as its on my mind at the moment

Just had a 2nd opinion of it and bill Richards racing said the same thing as Steve at med

I use the oil cooler to assist in keeping the whole engine temp under control on a hot summers day and long runs never used a stat to date, that said I dont drive the car in the Winter.

 

Lee if you have the funds you could get some longer oil pipes like the clubman arrangement this would give you some flexibility in where you locate the oil cooler.

erm... so tape over it when you don't need to cool your oil but don't fit a stat?  classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
