Can anyone recommend a particular socket set? I already have a 1/4" set, so need one of the larger size ones (1/2" drive?).

I have looked on the Halfords website but cant see a particular set that is suitable.

Halfords do sell superb socket sets and most of my sockets, spanners and screwdrivers are made up from their professional range. Mac Tools are also a good product

I've got the halfords professional 100 or 150? Piece sets they have both types (mm\1/2) think they're a bit expensive in the year but normally drop to £99 At Christmas

i too have halfords sockets and never broke one. i have had them for 11 years now and have given them some agro in that time im sure. there is just no point scrimping on tools, you will break cheap ones. when we were kids we had cheap sets and would always be splitting sockets, or cracking spanners.

i used to buy at least one set of something every month when i first started messing with cars, having plenty gear makes jobs easier!

Both Halfords sets only seem to come with 12-point sockets / spanners.  Nice if you like round bolt heads, but I prefer 6-point.

I like Snap-On tools myself, not cheap though. Failing that, Clarke tools have always been good for me. Crescent Tools are good too.

I've never really bought a socket set, I usually buy those rails or individual sockets.

im with harry.. snap on do make bloody good quality tools..

If its not snap on, i either go mac tools or Clarke (both from machine mart)

to be honest, the main reason i use snap on is that the van is convenient :))

I've used snap on for years at work. At home I use the halfords professional range and they are more than enough for what I do at home. Snap on are phenomenally expensive in most cases which is why I do not use them at home.

My recommendation for an avid home mechanic would be the halfords professional range, I've had one set for 5 years now and it's as good as the day I bought it.
