What are peoples views and methods of setting the Timing by Ear?

I have done some looking around while trying to set my timing and the advise has differed from those who will only use a timing light to those who swing the dizzy backwards and forwards until it sounds right and the revs start to drop. Should I be advancing it or retarding it until they start to drop, and then of course backing it off so it's running at it's maximum speed? Is this with the vac pipe connected or disconnected? So much conflicting advise to be honest has confused me.

Dave.

Personally I have set timing by ear in the past then matching the fueling to it, however since buying a timing light I have found my timing isn't perfect, but due to me tailoring the fueling to the ignition the car ran ok, but you will always get a better results when tuning using a timing light then adjusting the fueling to suit once the timing is bang on

the way i used to do it was listen to the exhaust note until it stops popping on idle then it is about right  never used a timing light on any of my cars and i had been in the trade 26 years

Well you can disconnect the vac advance unit so your able to set the mechanical advance, take the revs to 2000rpm on the idle screw and with a tacho increase the advance until maximum revs and then retard it until the revs drop approx 200rpm, lock it up there and reset the idle and reconnect the vac advance. Road test the car and if if pinks then retard it slightly.

But With timing lights costing so little these day with built in advance, I still would use one.
