thanks for all the helpful feedback guys much appreciated. The end result was a dodgy gasket between the carb and the bent bit of metal thing that divers and petrol away from the exhaust.
and for your books i have changed the tank to a 1995 tank and i have installed a facet fuel pump.
here she is all polished and getting ready for London to Brighton see everyone there
