hi all, new to this forum but had my 88 mini for 5 years now. Need help, does anyone know how to wire up to test my engine whilst it is out of the car. Just the simple way. I do not need support frames, gauges etc just what wire needs to go to where. I have been brousing the web for months to find a solution but as yet have found nothing.

The engine is a 998 A+. I took the 1380 out for overhaul and i have the 998 ready to go in but need to test first. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers  neil,

It won't tell you all that much, just hook the starter motor up to a battery so you can test the compression.

A battery cable going from a battery to the big starter motor stud, a feed off that to the + on the coil via an on-off switch, a feed to the big spade terminal on the starter via a heavy duty off-(on) switch, and a wire going from the short wire hanging out the dizzy to the - terminal on the coil

and finally a battery cable/jump lead going from the block/transfer case to the neg terminal on the battery

Have you any idea what happens when you rev up an unsupported engine? It can be quite dangerous.... be careful !!!

hi guys, thanks for the input, i only want to start the engine to ensure it runs as it has never been tested before i bought it, i do not plan on reving it , just get it ticking over for a few seconds. At least this way i know it runs.

Gremlin, got the info you gave, sorry for being a little dumb here but could you tell which wire i use from the dizzy. i have a black and red and i do not want to damage the dizzy as it is brand new.

cheers again guys for all your help.

neil

I started up a few 1275 engines on the floor last week, they do have a bit of kick when you rev them, but it's unlikely to fall over on solid ground so don't worry about this.

I hooked up a set of jumper leads via a starter solenoid to my new engine, and an electric fuel pump to a can of petrol, and + wire from battery to + on coil, and a - wire from coil to distributor. Ran fine, but didnt rev the crap as it was a fresh engine. No trouble trying to tip over! Got oil pressure ok, and no leaks :)

Check out my Youtube link.

If this is a fresh engine then a lot of people will advise you not to start it up until you are ready to get it up to temperature etc. Revs must be held up in order to properly bed in the cam followers.

the red wire on the dizzy should be a 12v live which feeds the internal ignition module, the black wire will feed to the coil -tive terminal which in laymans terms tells the coil to send a spark

Nice looking engine

For what it's worth it won't matter much what size the engine is, the reciprocating masses are pretty much the same across the board.
