Basically I had a really soft clutch-couldn't select any gears at all.

So i want to bleed it, the usual way but when i pressed the clutch-nothing. No bubbles of air came out and no fluid came out. Nothing moved/ happened when I pressed the clutch at all. The master cylinder was topped right up- but the cap is cracked.

This has never happend to me before, do you know whats going on?

Some things you should know:

1- verto

2- the clutch went overnight in a very short period of time- no fluid on the floor though

3- 1989 austin mini 30 limited edition

Cheers!!

There doesn't seem to be a leak- is it worth taking the slave cylinder out to cLean it as well as the hose?

You will need a new cap for the master cylinder, I bled mine a couple of days ago and it took about 5 mins on pumping the pedal hard down to the floor to feel any sort of pressure, keep pumping for a few more mins and see where it gets you :)

Whats the fluid level now?
Is the nipple clean? Do you get fluid out with the nipple fully unscrewed?
A crack in the cap cant cause the problem, but its wise to change it

Full to the top, nipple is clean but fluid does not flow whilst fully unscrewed. I'll get a new cap as well

Well I found a some fluid and bled it. I now have a firm feeling in the clutch, but still can't select any gears. Should I bleed it a few more times to make sure all of the air is out?

If you have a firm pedal, the throwout nut is correct and when depressed the throwout nut is up against the wok then you can rule out anything on the outside. I think the next thing to do is take off the wok to make sure the fingers aren't broken or bent. Do you remember if you had to do an unusual amount of slipping to get into a space or something?

This is a pic (upside down) of the nut when the clutch pedal is not being pressed. Should that be against the wok?

The throwout nuts LOOKS ok, you need to measure how far it is away from the wok without the pedal depressed and it needs to be 6.5mm. The loss of pressure over an hour is not good and will probably be the slave cylinder as they are fairly unreliable
