hi there ive got an anoying oil leak, it looked to be coming from the timming chain cover so i replaced the gasket,, no luck, so i removed the cover again fitted a new gaket and used gasket sealer, no still leaked so repeated again with a new cover and guess what still leaks.I have been told that behind the timming chain back plate is a rubber gasket ( looks like a gum shield) it cuold be from there. Any one else had this problem and can i change the rubber with the engine in??????????? Thanks

Hi,
It sounds to me like the oil seal needs replacing - have you reinstalled the washer correctly also? i will be doing this this week.
depending on the year of manufacture i believe you will need one of these...if your car is post '92

can you feel oil leaking from under the timing area with the timing cover off?
Changing the gum shield is a big job and will involve going down to the box - you will need a complete new set of engine and gearbox gaskets and its not an easy fox IMO. Can you not live with it until you need to do a strip down?

ive got a new gearbox gasket set and a half moon gasket, ive not tried with the just the cover off. the engine has only just been built, so id rather fix it now and get it right
