I had exactly the same problem- replaced the temp sender as you said but also replaced the thermostat, flushed the cooling system and it is great!!.

I would. I was replacing my heater matrix at the time and thought i may as well clean it all out and sort the temp gauge whilst i was at it. hope it comes to life soon!!!

Did you try the new thermostat in some hot water first to make sure it works? Don't write it off as an issue just because its new!!
Should i just drop it in some boiling water?

Put the thermostat in a pan with room temp water with a thermometer and bring the temperature up so you can tell if it's opening at the rated temp. If you drop it into boiling water it will only tell you that it opens at 100 degress C. What you're trying to find is it opening at the correct temp which can be 75C, 82C, or 88C which are the common temp thermostats for minis. If you still have the box or know which one you bought it should open at that temp, conversely it is stamped in some of the thermostats on the end.

So you should check to see if it opens at 82C if it opens at a lower temp you may have found your problem.
