One Carb Or Two?

Took my car off the road last year. Started sounding like this (literally within a day). WAS a nice 1293cc engine. It struggled to engage gears so not sure if it's something to do with the clutch.
I know that no-one will be able to say for sure but just an idea of whether to rebuild it or look for a replacement.

sounds like the clutch or flywheel could be loose

I did think clutch when it happened. Could also explain the gear change issue when I was limping home.
My main worries are if it's big end bearings or something within the gearbox. Does it sound like any of those?

take the clutch cover off and look there first as you can do it with the engine still in the car. if you find nothing then yes i would say big end or something. but the changing gear issue makes me suspect clutch issue

Is that an issue that's fairly common then? I suppose would explain why the noise so quickly - literally drove it to work fine then got in to drive home and it sounded bad. By the time I got home (2 or 3 miles) sounded like this!
New clutch then or tighten it up and go?

iv rarely heard of it happening but depends if it was torqued correctly when built ( I MAY BE WRONG but i think the flywheel has loctite??) its just the easiest thing to check and yeah i would have thought the bearing would have 'gone' more progressively than that. cant advise on what to do until you have checked it as you never know why it came loose or the damage it caused

Sound like loose pressure plate..is it a verto?
Can't remember as it's from a different car - I know it's a metro engine but wouldn't be able to tell you at the moment - it's in Mum's garage (imagine the cars we would find if all mums cleared out the garage!)

As far as I can remember, yes it does. It doesn't eliminate it completely but does reduce the noise.
That's why I originally thought clutch or gearbox.
Never had the time to look before as needed car for work so parked this up and bought a banger to get from A to B!
I'm in a position now where I need to start looking for replacement engines or parts to recondition ready to get started on it during the summer holidays (love working in a school!)

Sounds like the Idler gear is about to part company, press the clutch pedal down and rev it does it still make the same noise? as far as the big ends go whats the oil pressure like thats a good sign of bearing wear?

wonder if flywheel bolt has come loose - does happen
pressing clutch would force it on , quietening it a bit
whip the WOK off & have a peek
I had an idler gear saw thru the housing on a 998 auto years ago - that was noisy

Hi, had a similar problem last year. Came off motorway, tried to change gear, no joy, engine sounded like a bag of nuts had been dropped into it. Started to think that the gearbox has died, etc, but using an engine stethoscope, I pinpointed the noise was coming from the clutch housing. Took it off, and found that one of the clutch plate bolts had come undone and dropped out, hence the noise, plus a few of the other had worked themselves loose, and were oval in shape. New clutch. sorted.

I know it was over a year ago but well done to everyone that called it - took it apart today and this is what I found!
I'm guessing these should have loctite on them!?
