Hello all,

Got a problem at the minute with spraying my drivers wing. Ive been using celly for quite a few years now and always get a decent shine straight from the gun but not this time.

Few months ago I brought some more paint to do the drivers wing (only 1/2 litre). I usually thin the paint 50/50 with thinners first, then add more thinners (70/30) afterwards for the final top coats to get the shine. But this time no matter how much thinners I add the paints drying dull or a sort of matt finish. The weathers conditions have been perfect with perfect temps.

Ive sprayed this wing twice now both with the same effect. I did at first use standard thinners but then switched to anti-bloom thinners which made no difference. Could it be a problem with the paint? When I mix it up in the tin it seems visually to have a slight texture to it?

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated as I haven't got a clue whats going on.

Thanks.

Is it laying on flat or drying rough, if it's smooth and has no shine then try a little compound if this doesn't bring it up I would say its a paint problem.

When you lay it on its got the shine but then just drys dull and slightly rough. A bit like a primer finish. There's no orange peel in it at all. Need to flat it back and re paint though as I have thinned the paint that much it dripped out the pot and onto the wing >_<

It will probably shine up with a wet flat and mopping but the fact the gun finish is dull is baffling me.

How high is your pressure? With it being air dry if the pressure is too high it can prematurely dry the atomised paint and it will hit the panel dry rather than flowing on wet. If you have a smooth finish leave it cure for a bit and try and flat and polish it see what happens. Never known celly go off sat in the tin. But not saying it cant happen

Good luck

Sounds like you've got solvent base coat..

My understanding is topcoat has a different binder..

(Having never used solvent top coat I can't be 100%sure on it though)

Is it industrial cellulose or automotive ?

The industrial stuff will give an amazing satin/matt finish (of the kind you would try for years to perfect) almost like oxidised old paint, and buff up nicely when attacked.  The shine only lasts a while though before it goes back to being dull and flat and incapable of being buffed up.

Sounds like there is no shiners in the paint, try a different paint.

Thanks for the replies guys. Air pressure was set to 45/50psi when trigger was open, I did ramp down the pressure and tried again but exactly the same finish.

Will take the paint paint next week and see what they say. I've used the exact same method of painting I always use and I can always get a decent finish.

When ever I use celly it comes up flat , I mop it up with a polisher and you can see your face in it .

If you mix the paint 70/30 with thinners you can get a decent shine out the gun, I always do this and just give it a light mop afterwards

i love to use celly, and have always had good results right from the gun if mixed correctly.

however about 5/6 years back i was trying to paint the side of an allegro in ember glow, and i had the exact problem you seem to be having, i painted it 3 times, but found it wouldnt polish up properly afterwards.

i went back to some other jobs that needed doing, and got another batch of paint mixed up, this time it went on perfectly and stayed shiney. i can only assume it was something being the matter with the paint.
