Hello,

I am after some help with re fitting the suspension cones/trumpets to my 1996 Rover Mini Sidewalk.

I am in the process of rebuilding a replacement subframe but struggling to get the trumpets in. I have tried them attached to the radius arms, not attached, pretty much every way. Do the cones need compressing or is there a special technique?

Thanks in advance

Will.

Yep, you need the compress the cones. You'll want a metric tool (I think) from minispares, minisport etc.

I'm guessing this is the front subframe, if so a compressor tool is available and makes the job a thousand times easier, just release it slowly and guide it all in as it's been know for people to get it all in, unwind it, wonder why it's sitting so high and it's because the cone did not seat in the trumpet properly and the compressor tool won't wind back in because it's at an awkward angle and some destructive action is needed

And mind out when using the cone compressing tool, never put your head or body over it! If the threads were to let go it's like a loaded gun! Take care!

for the rear just disconnect the damper and prize the radius arm downwards and then push the knuckle into the cup and swing the donut end in

Danie - you wouldn't use a compression tool then?

Thanks for that. I shall try your technique.

I have fitted 13" wheels as we'll. What shocks would people recommend? I have standard shocks at the moment (i think).

Did all my suspension a couple of weeks back with hi-los, fronts defo need compression tool (as said before take care when its wound in) and for the back ones just a case of supporting the radius arm with a jack and firstly taking off the shock, then lower the radius arm and with a little tapping for persuasion and abit of swearing it will come out!! (one little warning older cones may shatter when removing them if they are old and brittle enough, one of mine cracked) I think ive got some laminated instructions somewhere if you like I can email it across?

Gazp that would be great thank you.

Would anyone recommend re mounting the subframe (minus the comes/trumpets) and fitting them with the subframe mounted to the car?

Fit the frame bare, they are pretty heavy when assembled and difficult to handle as the arms want to move all the time. You'll never get the cones and trumpets to stay assembled off the car anyway. It's the damper that holds everything in when it's bolted to the body.

I've removed your email address from the above, publishing that's a great way to become a spam magnet or get hacked. You can be contacted through the forum much more safely. Your address will have been archived somewhere by now though.

for the rear just disconnect the damper and prize the radius arm downwards and then push the knuckle into the cup and swing the donut end in

letting the hand brake off helps the arm drop
