A friend of mine had his late 2 year old Transit Van with all his tools stolen in London today, despite it being securely locked and immoblised like most other modern vehicles. Turns out Ford vans have a security weakness detailed below.......if you know anyone with one please warn them to take preventive action before it is too late........ :(

"Thieves have discovered a new way to steal your Ford van via overriding the manufacturer’s immobilisation system by connecting a Laptop/PDA into the OBD socket and programming a new key into the ECU.

They start by decoding the manufacturer’s door lock which unlocks all the doors, disables the alarm and gives them the key combination for your van so they can get a key cut with a new chip.

Once the key is cut they return to the van, unlock the doors with the new key and then connect their Laptop/PDA into the OBD/ECU connection where they can program in the new key, start the vehicle and drive it away — All without causing any damage."

Our Patented OBD/ECU Connection Protection Device encompasses the plug in a Secure Box which is attached to the anti roll bar behind the dashboard and can only be unlocked with the correct code/key.

Sounds like the issue BMW had on some of their 2009 era models, provided you could get into the cabin you could use the OBD port to program a new immobiliser chip - I am pretty sure they produced an update to fix this however

This was the BMW method......I think it has now been fixed:

BMW 1M stolen without keys in 3 minutes! This is a video of a £43,000 BMW 1M Stolen at 3am in 3 minutes. The thief's accessed the car's OBD port in the footwell by breaking the glass, reaching in and using a device to reprogram a blank key fob. The car was simply then unlocked and pushed off the drive and driven away.

This is the device they use, which only takes seconds to re-program a key:
