Spot And Fog Lights, What Order?

Best Answer RedRallyMini , 10 May 2014 - 10:37 PM

What?! No! Spots in the middle and fogs on the outside and pointed a bit outwards like Cooperman says, every rally car with the 4 lights next to each other has that setup.

I'm fitting spot and fog lights to the front of my mini, do the 2 spot lights go in the middle with a fog light either side or the other way around?

I'm fairly sure the two fogs go in the middle and and the two spots on the outside.

On the rally cars which had 4 lights across the front we usually had the driving lights in the centre and the fogs, angled out to 'see around the corners', at each end of the lamp bar.

We get so little fog these days that there seems little point in fitting fog lights.

In truth it is better to fit a really good pair of driving lights to increase the range of the headlights to help with night driving.

To be honest Peter, the car will very rarely get driven in the dark never mind in fog (although we do get quite a bit of fog in this area of Kent) Dare I say it, I'm fitting them for aesthetic reasons

It doesn't really mater in which positions then.

I may decide to take it to work on a foggy day in September.

And as I can see this from my house, it needs to be right

Fogs are less effective if you leave the headlights on, and to be used without headlights they have to be close (16 inches) to the sides of the vehicle.

Well I know Rover put the fogs in the middle on their cars with four auxiliary lights. At least the ones I have seen have been that way.

Do they need proper alignment for mot? My spots come on with beam. Is that likely to fail mot?

They must dip with main beam, otherwise they're not tested.

They only come on if I flash the lights or put lights on full beam.

Fogs on a classic mini are pretty much ineffective anyway, because of the position they are mounted in. In order to be effective in the fog, they need to be mounted much lower down and at the edges of the car (as they are on modern vehicles). You'd be better to do away with them as fogs and have them as four spot/driving lamps instead, that are wired to come on with main beam. That way at least they'd give you better headlight visibility in the dark, as opposed to being little more than decorative as fogs.
