Hi

 

i want buy a remote change gear box( a second hand one) how dom i identify between a 850 and 1000 gear box.

 

currently i have a remote change gear box.

Dimensionally they are the same...

 

The difference will be in the contents, most 850 boxes had a 3.7 final drive as standard, where as the 998 had a 3.4. The are some differences related to the age of the gearbox, 3 synchro vs 4 synchro and also different gear types and ratios..

But will there be a problem if i fix a the 850 gear box to a 1000 engine. will there be a proformance issue.

You can interchange the final drives, 998 vans also used 3.7 makes them a bit nippier but also noisier and with a tad worse mpg.

You're not confusing thee selector types are you?

Pudding stick, used on earlier 850's
Remote, introduced on the Cooper, then adopted on models other than the 850's, vans & pickups
Rod, used on everything eventually, introduced around 1972, Guess works might confirm the actual dates.
