I have seen one of the above blocks with AEG312 cast on it but no AEG634 cast on it so I believe it must be a very early thin flange block. Problem is that there is no engine number plate so full identification is not easy. However, there is a stamped serial number stamped just near the water pump cavity which matches the number on each main bearing cap. Does anybody know if there was any relationship between this stamped number and the missing plate number?

I believe the stamped serial numbers were used in factory. There is a sequence and somebody may be able to help you get a feel for the year when this was built - try posting the question on the mk1 forum.

I don't think you can find out the 'logbook' engine number from the info you have.

Maybe there is somebody out there that worked in the engine assembly area in the 1960's able to help here? Does anybody know of an ageing person that can help?

How do I locate the Mk 1 forum?

thanks

Just because the block only has AEG312 cast into it doesn't mean it is an early one, only the very last thick flange blocks have the AEG312 & AEG634 cast into them.

The cap numbers are not related to the engine number so if the alloy engine number tag is missing there is no way of finding the original engine number from the block.
