I am running a 998 metro engine; the FDR is 3.65.1, it does 70 but it is screaming!! What fdr would be best all round? And a better top speed at lower rpm? I can get a 3.105? Would that be any better? Or has anyone got a gearbox they would sell that has a better fdr?

With a 3.65:1 FDR at 70 mph it will be pulling about 4500 rpm, which is not really high for a 998. 

If you fit a higher FDR you will lose a lot of acceleration and may well find that the maximum speed is less due to the inability of the engine to get to peak power in top gear.

The original 998 Cooper used a 3.76:1 FDR.

The standard 998 in my City-E had a 3.1 fd and it cruised nicely at motorway speeds with reasonable acceleration, though you did need to drop to third to really get a move on.

 

Now the engine is mildy modified it cruises very nicely at "motorway speeds" and had decent acceleration.

Although the very late 998 HLE cars had a 2.9 fitted, they had a super-low first gear and different intermediate ratios to compensate, so i wouldn't advise going any longer than a 3.1 fd.
