As the title, I've got a 1275 to replace the 1100 lump and so far most things seem transferrable bar the standard items like radiator mount, and I think I need a different clutch arm (a short one?)

 

My question is, the old 1100 had a breather on the tappet cover, I can't find a location for one on the 1275, there isn't a space on the timing chain cover like the below link

 

 

 

 

Has anyone got any idea if and where mine is and if it needs installed?

Cant you not use the same rocker cover on the 1275? As far as I know the standard breathers on a 1275 are on the transfer case side of the engine, and the timing chain side. I had to remove my timing chain side one due to fitting a supercharger, but used the mechanical fuel pump hole to fit a breather there, as running electric fuel pump. I also got a breather on the rocker cover and transfer case all going into a small vented catch tank.

Maybe I described the old one wrong, it's mounted on a plate covering the pushrods at the back of the engine sorry. I haven't got any mounts on the timing cover for a crank cover?

 

Unfortunately my haynes manual is 69-82, I suspect the engine is last of the a-series or early a+ series which means a different manual

Ah, yes, smaller engines had the breather on one of the tappet chest covers. 1275 engines dont seem to have these covers, so like I say above, the timing cover has one as well as the transfer case/clutch side of the engine.

Ah I see, is it possible to run just the one on the case/clutch side of the engine as my timing cover lacks any form of breather or space to mount one

 

Edit: Having significantly used the search button and finding "Dan" answers all over the forum I can confirm that crank case ventilation is both useful & worthy in a road car, and that two heads breathers are better than one to avoid pressure in different bits of the engine (I think was my understanding)

 

Could someone just confirm that and I will be on my merry way to find a timing cover with breather :-D

Definitely necessary to have a breather, but as of need of two, I would say, if not obscured etc, one breather should have no problems of ventilating the engine.

There should be 3 holes on the transfer case sife of the engine, one big one and two small threaded holes, get a breather to bolt on their, either plumb it up to your carb or poke the pipe into a catch tank

You could have a pipe fitted to the rocker cover breather which I think some cars had as standard. You can get vented oil cap fillers to relieve some pressure too. I the more breathing the better.
