I know this has been asked many, many times but I've found so many figures I don't know which to believe!

I've found 40.42, 45 and 50 ft/lb so you see where the confusion stems :-)

I have a 1293cc A+

Do I use 50ft/lb as recommended 'out there on the web' for an A+?

The original BMC Workshop Manual gives 42 lb.ft. for the 1275 Cooper 'S' which has the 11-stud head (well, 10 studs & one bolt).

You can safely go to 45 lb.ft. with the latest gaskets, like the excellent BK450.

OK, thanks Peter.  We'll go with 45 although we're on the GEG300 head gasket.  Will that be OK to 45 ft/lb?

That's a good gasket and will be fine at 45 lb.ft.

With a copper faced gasket it's a good idea to put a fine film of light oil on the gasket faces when fitting. But never do this on a BK450 'black' gasket.
