I'm now trying to solve the mystery of my gearbox. It has the number 22A363 cast on it, but the block/car is a 1965 Cooper 998cc. This doesn't add up according to what I've read. It also has the number 9F8538 stamped on it over to the left and this can apparently tell you whats inside, but nowhere can I find this info. Any ideas? When did they stop making the 22A363? I know they put some in the 997. It is a remote shift. Should my car have a B type 22G68? Many thanks for all the info.

Also, does anyone know of a logical reason to put an earlier 997 gearbox into a 998? Was the 22A363 better? Obviously a 50 year old car may well have had a new gearbox, but logically it would have been like for like or a later one I assume, not earlier. It may transpire that the gears inside are later and it's just a replacement casing. I'm going to take it apart and have a look inside, what should I look for to identify it? Ta
