Engine Running On 2 Cylinders Can Anyone Help?

Best Answer sonikk4 , 18 May 2014 - 09:35 PM

By doing a compression test you will see if you have sufficient and equal compression across all four pistons. (within 10% of each other is a good sign) Ideally you will be looking for 150 psi + per pot.

If you have no compression on 2 and 3 for example it will not matter if you have a spark and fuel. Without the compression there will be no firing.

Its a basic check and if you don't have a compression tester you can buy them from Halfords etc. Its something to rule out out of your fault diagnosis.

Hi everyone,

Okay a bit if background

My car is a 1998 Cooper Mpi.

Rebuilt my car from a bare shell and replaced the box clutch and cylinder head fitting all new gaskets and torquing up properly.

New sparks, new leads, air filter oil filter and valve clearances set ( I think)

Set up leads in line with how it was when It came off the car.

Only appear to have two cylinders and I don't know why. I've pulled a lead out at a time and they all are issuing sparks.

Please can anyone suggest done reasons as I'm out of ideas.

yes, although they don't correspond to the webbing numbers. i set them up the same as they were (which was right when i took them off the car)

No i haven't can you explain why this would mean the car would run on 2 cylinders? My assumption os that if its not exact this would result in a lumpy idle only?

By the way its worth noting that the head is a brand new old stock fully built head.

Thanks,

D

Thanks,

I would be double checking that the HT leads are in the right order before trying anything else!

first check the HT's as above, the Rover workshop manual is wrong and the Haynes is correct.  From memory I think 2 and 3 are wrong in the rover manual, if you used rover workshop manual beware!

I just put my mpi back it only ran on two cyls, turned out to be one cleaned injector was not working, just a thought!
