Been looking at a few threads involving Sill Replacement. I am doing the Inner and Outer Sills and need some advice on painting.

Looking at other projects like on of Sonikk4's and this one some of your guys prime and top coat the sills inside and out before welding? Surely this will all bubble off when welded?

I am part replacing the inner sills and was going to clean up the underside hidden area of my inner sills to bare metal and Etch Prime with U-POL Etch Primer and Weld Through Primer where they will be welded.

Once everything is fitted the underside of the floor and inside the floor will be painted with Jotun Jotamastic 87 Epoxy Primer which needs to go onto bare metal.

What would you guys recommend?

If you do paint inside surfaces it will only burn off where you weld so will still offer extra protection, filling with waxoyl or similar after will then hopefully seal these areas to prevent corrosion.

I was thinking of Epoxy Priming the Inner Sills but leave the areas that will be welded and paint those areas with U-POL Weld Through Primer.

The rest of the underside will be covered with Stone Chip over Epoxy Primer but not sure what Top Coat to apply under the Sills, Stone Chip Smooth?

You can seam seal the inner sill to door step joint.

Paint the bits that wont be welded with normal paint and weld through primer on the bits that will be welded.

Try and keep heat to a minimum

Something has to be better than nothing. I for one cannot afford to get my car dipped and E coated so I do the best with what I have to hand.

Having a roll over jig is a godsend as once you have completed your welding then you can position the car in such a way that you can spray a lot of paint into the sill cavity. The same applies if you and when you stonechip the underside you can force the nozzles into all of the nooks and cavities.

Even without a jig there are things you can use to get extra protection in there.

I have used the Eastwood internal frame coating. It comes with a small hose and nozzle to get it in there and into the cracks. Check it out on Eastwood.com. I like it.

I painted mine before fitting etch primer ,primer then top coat
Plug welding doesn't burn off that much paint
As others have said best to have some protection in there rather than none
Finish the job with wax oil or similar product

I temporarily fitted my new floor then welded on the new sills to the sill line then removed the floor. That way I could lay on the paint all over the inside of the sill and inside the doorstep. The only bit then that was burnt off was the welds along the bottom of the sills once I refitted the floor panel, but my thinking was I can spray in some paint or stone chip into the vent holes to hopefully counteract this.

Take a look at Bilthamber stuff. Their Dynax S50 is light years ahead of waxoyl and an awful lot easier to apply.

My lads used this and I agree much better than waxoyl
