My mini when bought had been fitted with a hydraulic handbreak that A) doesn't lock and B) when used could launch you through the window.how easy is it to fit a cable hand break and as a novice am I right in thinking its two cables, one to each drum?

It depends on the year of the car, pre 76( i think) had twin cables, post 76 were single cable

I would look thru this ...

https://www.minispar.../Brakes.aspx?04

I'm guessing at cables - quadrants & pins ,  Compensator Bracket (if later)

I would think the brake has the lever inside the back plate - but without being there its a guess ?

and the cable plates in the floor & handbrake it's self , & back plate gaiter ? & pins

take care when removing the old hydraulic brake , as if it is in the original place it will need the pipes re routing

why not go for a nice new cuprinicle front to rear pipe ?

If you are not sure get someone to fit it , when reworking brakes , it's best to get some who knows

EDIT - after looking at your Avatar - I am guessing it's a early set up
