Hello,

I have just started restoring A 1986 Mini Advantage

I know its a long way off yet but was just thinking ahead of time about the keys i have.

I currently have a key for the doors, a key for the boot, a key for the petrol cap and then another for the ignition

When it is done I would really like to have just one key for all.

However all over the internet I can only seem to find barrel sets that only contain 3 barrels

Does anyone know where you can buy a set of 5 or another way around this problem

Many Thanks

Marcus

You can only have

One for doors and boot
One for fuel cap
One for ignition
So 3 keys in total

Doh ! I was afraid that would be the answer

But Thanks for reply

If you were to have brought a Mini brand new, you would have only had one key for everything correct ?

Oh wow didn't know that!

So 3 keys it is then, although I might try and make a remote boot catch, which open from a button on the dash, if so then is it possible to remove the barrel in the ignition and swap it for the barrel that was in the boot lock?

Thanks

HAHA wow 6 Keys,

I have had a thought about this, and I am going to use a dash mounted ignition switch as you can use the same key style as the doors,

I also don't like having keys on the steering column as they hit your legs (and I am short! (imagine if you have long legs))

I am going to give this a try as I cannot find a set of 5 lock barrels for a Mini:

Although this is for a Land Rover I think the barrels are almost the same so hope it should work

Thanks

Originally there was only one key, but no locking petrol cap or steering lock. If you really only want one key how about fitting central locking? I'd much prefer my Mini to have a working steering lock. It's a legal acquirement on new cars, so it may be an issue to remove one.

Yeah, thats a good point!

I did think about the steering lock, So might end up having one key for doors and petrol cap and one for ignition (its not really the end of the world haha)

you could fit a central locking kit to replace the lock on the door and fabricate on internal release for the boot and also put the filler cap inside the boot aswell. then you will only need one key for the iginition.

This one appears to use FS keys, the same as Mini locks. I couldn't  guarantee it fits or whether it's vented, believe it's originally an MG part. You can swap levers in FS lock barrels to make them match a specific key. That's provided you have the levers to do it of course; you can also leave some out but it degrades the security. That might not be a bad thing - if it means you're faced with replacing a barrel, rather than a filler cap with levering damage to the tank & bodywork.
