hello all, I have been reading the site for a while.  lots of good info and ideas.  I brought a 87 cooper back from Japan when I moved to Louisiana.  love the car, but finding shops down here that will work on it is a little difficult.  I did find a shop that will do a engine swap.  im wondering what every one thinks about putting a Honda engine in the cooper, and what you guys think of awd or fwd.  thanks for the input.

Personally, I'd go for AWD if you are thinking of a Honda swap.

Just my thoughts / experience of trying to put the power from a Swift GTI conversion through FWD, if I did it again I would 100% go 4x4.

forgive me for a silly question, are there any tricks to make the wheels catch when the swap is fwd only?

If you mean increase traction on a mini , with a more powerful engine -    IMHO ...

sticky tyres , locking diff (can be a pain) , maybe some form of traction control ?

for a fast pull away , the best way to go would be front inline engine with rwd

as a car pulls away the weight transfers towards the rear anyway

I would have a look at the ZCars section - could even go with the motorbike rear engine conversion

http://www.zcarsuk.com/mini.php

0 to 60 - 3.4 sec

edit - another way to go - is to lighten the shell , strip everything you don't need - less weight to move quickly

look for a lighter engine as well

In the USA I think your laws are more flexible than the UK car wise

I looked into the motor bike swap, looks like a fun, but this one is my daily driver.  if I come across another mini I plan on making a fun motorbike monster.  thanks for the input I will see what my mechanic can do.
