Is there a way to see if it is the switch that has gone or if its lights is there a way to bridge the connection to make lights work to see if it is the switch?

Bridgeing of switches is dodgy as you may just short the main feed out to the earth circuit for the bulb, what car are we taking about year/model. Check the BS wiring colours in the Electrical of the FAQs it will give you the colours of the circuit
