Hi All

 

last night i removed my the engine from my 998 so that the shell can go off to be sprayed. while the engine is out im gona give it a good clean and paint will change the water pump and head gasket. but was wondering is there anything else i should do while it is out? im not looking for any performance upgrades just want a nice running 998 with as few oil leaks as possible :-p are there any seals worth replacing?

any advice will be gratefully received.

Depends what you want to spend really, ideally a full strip down but funds may not allow this

i dont mind spending a couple 100 to get her running nice im planning to keep her for a couple years and then passing over to my son as a first car so want to do it right.

If it's not broke don't fix it. Lol. But if there are obvious leaks like rod change oil seal nearly always needs changing. Alan

was going to take the head off to paint and check the condition for the pistons but if thats not worth doing ill leave the head on.

Change the head gasket if you were planning on taking the head off, no matter how many stories you hear about head gaskets not sealing if you do it all right, it wont leak, and use a quality gasket

Would a BK450 do the OP?

Is this a test? The BK450 is a 1275 gasket, I get the Minispares small bore performance fibre gasket, mainly because it quotes the compressed volume and torque stages

If it were me I would give it a refresh, New bearings, oil pump, water pump etc. Should keep it going for a few more miles!

ive found the firbe ones are the only ones i can get to seal,

copper ones are terrible

When I had some cylinder head work done, the valves weren't sealing but I'd already torqued it down, but obviously hadn't got up to temperature or even had coolant in it, I was advised by the engine builder that it would be fine and it was amazingly!

Use a sealant with it. A light application of silicone sealant will help. I use it on Aston DB2 engines and works a charm. Allows a bit of give too whilst fitment.

Silicone on your head gasket?! I'm guessing you don't put it near the fire rings?
