Hi guys,

I have a '94 SPi running on 13x6 wheels with yokos tyres. but as the title suggests the steering is really vague, when driving in a straight line there is loads of play in the steering wheel before the car starts to change direction. its seems to have lost that point and shoot mini feel :(

I was hoping that someone could help shed some light on what might be causing this. will it be something as simple as new bushes, or will it be suspension related (running Hi-Los too)

Thanks

It is impossible to diagnose without more information. The 13" wheels will cause more wear on certain items.

However, jack the front up and check the following:

The splined connection between steering shaft and pinion.

The U-bolts holding the rack in place.

The rack itself for end play.

The track rod ends.

The tie-bar front rubbers

The wheel bearings.

The upper & lower ball joints.

As well as Cooperman's check list it would be worth checking the all the front subframe mounts - these are rubber isolation mounts and may need replacing. Two at front and two at rear of the front subframe.
