I decently brought a 1275 a+ block crank head pistons and cam because I'm going to upgrade from 998. Been doing a lot of reading and can't really find exactly what I'm after because I want to use the gearbox from my 998 which I believe is before a+ it's a 1972 engine so would just be a normal a engine and block.
Is the anything stopping me from putting a+ block and so on onto a pre a box

Cheers Jason

You can put an A+ block onto an A series gearbox, yes.

What you will need to do tho' is retain the A series transfer gears and obtain yourself a 1275 A series primary gear. You will then either need to put a conversion bearing in an A+ transfer case or use an A series transfer case, but make sure which ever you use it has a breather hole and is not blanked off as you'll need it.

The only gearboxes you cannot put a 1275 block onto is the early 3 synchro's which come of small bores ( 850's, 998s etc ) which is why the cooper S had specific gearboxes until they obtained the 4 synchro.

Ok thanks for that so on the 1275 it doesn't have anything about from crank cam pistons block and head so what would I need to obtain for that side of things as has no transfer gears or primary

Retain the idler gear and input gear (fixed to the gearbox) from your A series, but the primary gear from your 998 will not fit on the 1275 crank so you need a replacement.

You'll also need to drill the breather on your transfercase from the 998 otherwise the 1275 will not have enough breathers for the crankcase.

Ok I'm not taking the 998 apart so will need a 1275 transfer case with a breather. And a primary gear for a 1275 pre A+

And transfer case do you mean where the timing chain is?

Yes.

and the transfer case is the one which hold these gears in place, some people call it the clutch case, because it separates the clutch from the rest of the engine.

If you're removing the gearbox from your 998 then you will be removing the transfer case.
