I have a 1979 mini

sometimes it is stiff to go into gears and when I pump the clutch its seems to eventually go in..... I wonder if the clutch is not correctly adjusted as when I have my foot fully on clutch is rolls forward.....

also in 3rd and 4th when I have my foot flat to the floor to accelerate it seems sluggish and then when I ease the throttle it pulls away better

Any ideas

cheers Stirling

I'm no expert but I would say the first thing to investigate is the hydraulics - are you getting full travel of the rod that comes out of the clutch slave cylinder? Are you losing clutch fluid? If it's hydraulics then that's relatively easy to fix, as it's external to the engine/box.

If the clutch plate is worn then you'll get the engine revving but you're not going anywhere or the engine seems to rev freely but you don't accelerate - that doesn't sound like what you're describing so I'd go for hydraulics first :-)

Im not mini expert but knowledge of cars/experience would say it sounds like its running very rich at full throttle.

Check the linear movement at the very top of the clutch arm. There must be a minimum of 0.5" travel at the top of the arm when the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor. If it is less than that there is a high chance that there is a hydraulic problem, probably a failing slave cylinder.

With regard to the running issues, it could be timing too retarded and/or incorrect mixture. It could also be lack of oil in the carb dashpot.
