Oooh. I wouldn't put a jet wash near an engine... ! I bought a H20 steam cleaner from Poundland which has been really excellent in cleaning my engine bay up.

I wouldn't use a jet wash, I've killed an electronic ignition unit using one to clean my engine, as well as removing paint! Get a load of spray on engine degreasent (the cheap stuff works as well as gunk), a brush, (alloy wheel cleaning ones work well) and a bucket of warm water. Simply apply a load of degreasent, scrub with the brush and rinse the rest off with warm water. Rinse and repeat until you have a shiny engine.

I used gunk and a drill powered wire brush attachment, then washed it down with gunk again. I bought an aerosol and brush on gunk

Just wouldn't jet wash any engine, let alone a Mini one. You'll be forcing water into places it shouldn't go and no amount of WD40 will cure that. Steam or degreasant.

I used gunk on the weekend and it did the job. I washed it down with the hose and covered all electrics with sandwich bags in case of any splashes. One thing to note is that Gunk stinks to high heaven. Do it away from the house, don't get it on clothes/trainers you want to wear again.
