Wondering if anyone can answer for me if the Jap auto spi's used the twin point water pump or just the standard one with no bypass.

It looks like the twin one on there now and I know they use other mpi parts like the coil pack and ECU I guess they had them lying about.

Thanks

Toby

I believe your rad is side mounted, if so its an SPi water pump.

Valid point didn't think of that. I assume the blanked bypass outlet on the minispares ones is just an aftermarket thing and therefore is not on the original ones?

It is an original one for an SPi.

Careful - they don't all follow the same convention, I think we discussed this before.

I think they were using up what ever they had left over to finish up stock - bloody shame they didn't put a jap engine in it too :-)

The pre 1997 models use the standard SPI pump. That is what I used on my 1994 Jap Cooper. I am not sure about after that.

Mine is 98'. I believe a photo is in order of my pump. Will do that later today.

Would not be too fussed except I have posted it to someone who is going on holiday next week to the UK and will bring it back for me. So it's a kind of one shot to get it right situation.

Thanks for the input guys I will get back to you with a photo in a bit.

The real difference is the alternator mounting arm, it's not there on MPi pumps because it would get in the way. Neither late carb, SPi or MPi pumps have bypass drillings, the MPi one doesn't even have the stub but I don't think having it would cause a problem. Unless the pump inlet port is physically shorter, I haven't put them next to each other to see. I'm not sure but I think the actual pump flow is the same as other deep impeller pumps.
I think your car uses the MPi pump because it uses the MPi type alternator mountings fitted with an all in one alternator and AC bracket, unlike earlier J spec cars that used a supplementary bracket for the AC. It's not made from leftovers, they sold far more cars in Japan than the UK at the time so if anything UK cars are made from leftovers that weren't used on J spec or German cars! It's just a market specific engine for a different country. They would at have kept the auto going just in Japan if they weren't serious about it.

Well I had to order this morning or run the risk of getting nothing. I just checked the alternator mounting and you are correct its the MPI one. Shame I ordered the SPI one. The order has shipped already do you think I should just order the mpi one or can I grind that lug off so it will fit do you think
