My 998 from 1998 has a vacuum 59D distributor, I believe. Looking for an electronic ignition kit.

The Aldon ignitor looks quite a sensible cost/effect option but if I go for the whole distributor thing I see Swiftune do one which says you just block off the vacuum, even if fitted , and the electronic magic will take over.

What's not to like? Is it really that easy to get rid of the vacuum and if so why don't I see it from the other manufacturers (123-mainispares etc)?

Race distributors dont use vacuum advance as under wide open throttle there is no manifold depression, a vacuum advance unit  allows the ignition to be advanced while cruseing on a light throttle where there is a weak mixture (weak mixtures require more advance to burn) All road cars need vacuum advance otherwise you will loose MPG and torque and throttle response on a light throttle.

I run a Aldon yellow with Aldon electronic trigger, and a Vacuum advance which you can order direct from Aldon. Not seen much about the distributor from Swift, but it must have some sort of throttle sensing/engine load to enable light throttle advance? Thats if its any good for road use?

EDIT

Just had a look at the swifttune distributor and makes no mention of road application

That all makes good sense. I phoned them today and was slightly baffled by the response, but armed with your logic I can quiz them again. The only reason I thought I'd look at their stuff is I'm running a SW5 cam and their distributor runs their recommended advances. (whether that makes a jot of difference).

However, it's still not cheap and as I have 2 reasonable 59Ds it  might be as well to stick the Aldon trigger into one of those and keep my vacuum.
