I'm puzzled that my mini has a cat. I was under the impression that unless a engine was fuel injected (to keep a close control of the CO) than a catalytic converter is no good, or certainly won't work for long?

I have a mechanic friend who thinks that even tho my mini has a cat it is exempt from needing it mot wise, he isn't a mot tester tho. Was just wondering if anyone can confirm this either way, particularly anybody who is a qualified tester or has personal experience of this matter.

The reason I'm interested is my cats about rotted out and was going to replace it with a straight pipe.

If your car is pre 1990 you dont need it!

>1990 it IS required!!

But you could say it has a pre 1990 engine fitted and use a link pipe ;)

My car should have failed(1993 fitted with deCAT pipe) but i have a standard system in the shed, so got away with it ;)

Mines a 93 1275 sprite. Looks like the cats been Bodge welded a couple of times before so I think I will just keep it for test day and run a straight pipe. Is the difference in performance noticeable ??

I've done a bit of googling and found the definitive answer. (Copied from gov.uk)

"Some passenger cars first used during the transition period (i.e. 1 August 1992 to 1 August 1995) and some light goods vehicles and large passenger cars first used on or after 1 August 1994 were not required to be manufactured to the EC standards requiring advanced emissions control systems to be fitted. For these vehicles the non-catalyst test will be applied. Owners of vehicles which were first used during this transition period, are advised to check the entries in the Annex to this booklet or contact the vehicle manufacturer. "

If I understand this correctly the only pre august 1995 minis that have to pass the cat test are the fuel injected ones. (Because they're listed in the annex it mentions above)

Here's the link if you want to check it out for yourself. https://www.gov.uk/g...7th_Edition.pdf
